Broken Pieces on a Firm Foundation

June 26, 2013

Carries_Rock-html.jpgOne morning while waiting in the lobby for an appointment, I discovered a small, broken piece of concrete by our front door. Thinking it might be a danger to our guests; I carried it along with me to my office and set it outside my office door. With the busyness of my week, it soon became forgotten as it blended into the hallway background.

Upon This Rock
A few weeks later as I prepared a cup of tea in our conference room, I heard shuffling in the hallway by my office door. A fellow co-worker brought a smile to my face as I saw him place a small plaque on my broken piece of concrete. It had the following Bible verse:  “Now I say to you that you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church, and all the powers of hell will not conquer it” (Matthew 16:18).

Bible is Authoritative Word of God
The Sioux Falls Ministry Center’s statement of faith declares that we believe the Bible “is the inspired, infallible, authoritative Word of God” (2 Timothy 3:16). The focus of our ministry is directly inspired by God as we follow what the Bible commands. We are building God’s church through the authority of His Word. This is our foundation.

Rough Edges
Jagged, rough and seeming to have outlived its purpose, the chunk of concrete sits by my door. Looking around, I see jagged rough edges on lives marked with sin (selfishness, pride, gossip, gluttony). Without our Lord and Savior, we look like this rough piece of concrete full of sinful desires and actions. However through the blood of Jesus, we are able to become something more.  Our rough edges are smoothed and we are fixed on a firm foundation.

Firm Foundation
Through Jesus’ redeeming work on the cross, we are freed from sin.  God is able to work through us to build His church. We stand on Him as our foundation and are able to do His work through the miraculous power of the Holy Spirit. All ministries within the SFMC stand on the foundation of God’s Word. Only through His equipping are the nine ministries able to serve our struggling neighbors in a loving and compassionate way.

Building God’s Church
We praise God for the firm foundation He has placed beneath our feet at the SFMC. We also claim the promise from 2 Timothy 3:16 that the powers of hell will not conquer it. Thank you for your prayers of protection and equipping the “saints” at the SFMC as they serve our struggling neighbors and build up God’s Church.
